Cadence — Step Tracker for iPhone and Apple Watch
Frequently asked questions
Cadence isn't showing my steps. What should I check?
Cadence reads step data from Apple Health. Make sure Health access is enabled: go to Settings → Privacy & Security → Health → Cadence and confirm Steps, Walking + Running Distance, Flights Climbed, and Active Energy are all turned on. Then open Cadence and your data should appear.
What are the active calories shown in the app?
Cadence displays active calories (Cal) — the energy burned through movement — sourced from Apple Health. This is the same figure Apple Watch and the Fitness app show for the Move ring. It does not include resting/basal calories. Calories are shown on the Today screen, in your daily history, and on your Apple Watch.
How do I set separate goals for weekdays and weekends?
Open the Settings tab in Cadence and use the Weekday Goal and Weekend Goal pickers. Cadence automatically applies the right goal each day based on the day of the week.
My step history didn't appear after installing. How do I import it?
On first launch, Cadence walks you through a setup wizard that imports your full Apple Health history. If you skipped it or need to run it again, go to the Settings tab and tap Set Up Cadence Again in the Data section. This re-runs the wizard and rebuilds your ledger from Health. Your iCloud-synced history will also restore automatically if you are signed into the same iCloud account.
What does "Set Up Cadence Again" do?
"Set Up Cadence Again" in the Settings → Data section re-runs the Cadence setup wizard. Use it if you want to re-import your step history from Apple Health, update your goals, or reconfigure your notification preferences. Your existing step history and ledger are never affected — the wizard only adds or updates, never deletes. It's safe to run at any time.
Will my data transfer to a new iPhone?
Yes. As long as you are signed into the same iCloud account, Cadence will automatically restore your full history and settings on a new device when you install the app.
My historical step goals look wrong. Can I change them for all past records?
Yes. Go to the Settings tab, scroll down to the Data section, and tap Update Historic Goals. This allows you to choose a weekday goal and a weekend goal that will be applied to every past day — weekdays (Monday–Friday) will use the weekday goal, and weekends (Saturday–Sunday) will use the weekend goal. You'll be asked to confirm before any changes are made. Note that this only updates the goal each day was measured against. Your actual step counts are never modified.
Can I change the goal for a specific past day?
Yes. Tap any day in the History tab to open the day detail view, then tap the pencil icon next to the date in the upper left. You can set a custom goal for that individual day without affecting any other records. The change saves immediately and syncs to iCloud.
My Insights tab or other data looks incomplete after installing the app.
This usually happens if your iCloud data is still downloading in the background after the app first opens. To fix it, go to the Settings tab, scroll to the Data section, and tap Sync from iCloud. This will pull your full history, goals, and preferences from iCloud and merge them with the data on your device. Your existing local data is never overwritten — only missing records are added.
What is the "On Pace" projected total in the History week view?
From Tuesday onward, the History week view shows a projected end-of-week step total based on your current pace. It's calculated by taking your sealed daily totals so far this week and adding your average daily steps multiplied by the remaining days. It only appears for the current week and is hidden on Mondays when there isn't enough data yet.
How do I get goal notifications?
Cadence offers two notifications. The Goal Reached notification fires once when you hit your daily step goal. The Morning Nudge sends a daily reminder at 9 AM with your goal for that day — weekday and weekend goals are shown correctly for each day type. Both can be toggled in Cadence's Settings tab. To manage notification permissions, go to iPhone Settings → Notifications → Cadence.
Does Cadence work with Apple Watch?
Yes. Cadence includes a native Apple Watch app with a 3-page layout showing today's steps and progress, a week chart, and your goal settings. It stays in sync with your iPhone automatically.
Does Cadence collect or sell my data?
No. Cadence does not collect, transmit, or sell any personal or health data. Your data stays on your device and in your private iCloud account. See our Privacy Policy for full details.
What is the tip jar?
Cadence is free to use with no subscriptions. Core step tracking, the Apple Watch app, and all complications will always be free. The tip jar is an optional way to support development if you find the app valuable. Tips are one-time purchases processed securely by Apple.
